If a certain page on an Internet site doesn't load for some reason or in case a link is not functioning, the visitor shall see an error page with some generic message. The page will have nothing in common with the rest of the site, that may make the visitor leave the website. A possible solution in this case is a feature offered by some website hosting companies - the ability to set your own personalized error pages which shall have the same style and design as your Internet site and which can contain any text or images you want dependent upon the specific error. There are four standard errors which could occur and they involve the following so-called HTTP status codes - 400, when your browser sends a bad request to the hosting server and it can't be processed; 401, if you're supposed to log in to see a webpage, but you have not done this yet; 403, if you do not have an authorization to view a certain page; and 404, in case a link which you have clicked leads to a file that does not exist. In any of these situations, visitors will be able to see your custom made content rather than a generic error page.
Custom Error Pages in Shared Hosting
If you purchase a shared hosting
from us, you will be able to set personalized error pages for your websites easily, because this function is part of all our solutions. Once you have created the files and uploaded them to your website hosting account, you should check out the Hosted Domains section of your Hepsia CP and click on the Edit button for the particular domain or subdomain. Inside the pop-up which will show up, you shall see drop-down options menus for all four types of errors and for each one of them you can select an Apache default page, a generic page from our system or a personalized page. If you pick the third option, you should just enter the URL to the file which you have uploaded and save the change. One other way to set custom error pages is to create an .htaccess file inside the domain or subdomain folder and to add several lines of program code in it. If you don't have previous experience or if you are just unsure how to do this, you could simply copy/paste the code from our Knowledge Base article on that matter.
Custom Error Pages in Semi-dedicated Servers
All semi-dedicated servers
which we offer support customized error pages and it will not take more than a few clicks from your Hepsia hosting Control Panel to use this functionality. The option is included in the Hosted Domains section of your Control Panel in which you will need to enter the links to the custom-made files through very simple drop-down menus and a user-friendly interface. Of course, you need to upload them inside your account before that. If you do not need to use this function at some point, you can disable it just as fast and choose an Apache server page or a default page from our system to be viewable whenever your visitors encounter an error. If you'd like to, you may also use an .htaccess file to permit the personalized error pages. The file has to contain a specific line of code as well as a link for every single error type and you can discover an example of the entire content for all four error types in our Help section.
